Collaborative Genealogy: Building a World Tree on WikiTree
Speaker Vicki Blanco Borchers
Discover how WikiTree (a free, volunteer-based platform) redefines genealogy as a collaborative, rigorous, and deeply meaningful pursuit. Unlike traditional platforms that keep family trees isolated, WikiTree invites us to build a single, shared “One World Tree” where everyone contributes and benefits.
This talk explores how WikiTree combines the openness of Wikipedia with the depth of historical archives and the connectivity of a social network. You’ll learn how collaboration works in practice—editing profiles, citing sources, and enriching biographies as a global team. We’ll look at profiles that tell real stories, not just names and dates, and explore thematic projects on topics like migration, women’s history, science, and more.
You’ll also get a glimpse into WikiTree’s active community through live events, global challenges, and peer learning spaces.
It’s not just your story. It’s ours.
This talk will be held on the first floor of the Centre for Student Life, Room 1.26/1.27
