The Welsh Language - A Progressive Force in a Populist World
Speaker Aled Edwards
An exploration of how the Welsh language has evolved from being excluded from public life in the Acts of Union (1536 and 1543) and discouraged in the education system through the Welsh Not (19th Century) to gaining official status in the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure of 2011. A consideration of the role of the Protestant Reformation in strengthening the use of Welsh and how progressive values have shaped Welsh devolution since 1998. A concluding consideration of the importance of diversity and the concept of Wales being a Nation of Sanctuary in the face of modern global populism.
